I love how we all converge on things. Two or three of us start in on something in particular, we talk about it, and then everybody else climbs on the wagon too, because how can they not when it's obviously so worth gushing about? I'm talking specifically about TTW just now, but I'm also talking about the phenomenon in general. Who the initial few are is always changing, but the pattern still remains the same.

The point of this, in case you were wondering, is to say that I think we should do an internet-based book club. Y/N/VY?

Can I vent for a moment? I need some redhead therapy. I was recently dumped (like 24 hours ago) and I don't know why. He doesn't know why. The attraction just left.

Seeing as redheads are amazing (compliments to the entire community), how could something like this happen. I know the honeymoon phase can end, but why so suddenly.

I think something triggered it, and I'm sure there are several factors; but we seemed so happy.  Usually both parties feel something strange and then one brings up the idea of a break up.  This was totally one sided.  We're different ages, but that didn't bother us (so I thought). Probably just on different roads all of a sudden..I need a better car. :) ;)

I'm just going to post photos...and this will be the end of my dwelling.

we were only together 7 months..I feel like our relationship was cut short.

Oh, yeah. Forgot to mention this. (As I know you all hang on every typed word of mine, waiting for celebrity spotting anecdotes.)

The star of this week's CSA: Kevin Smith, writer/director/producer/actor of Clerks, Chasing Amy, Dogma, etc. He was standing in line at the Simpsons, right next to my VIP group on Monday.

I was a total idiotic dork, waved at him with a big grin, told him I loved his work in a VERY quiet voice as I didn't want him getting spotted by the rest of the crowd, and then walked away.

I am now about 99% certain he wanted to smack me for that.

There is an old proverb of exotic origin which states "Eat a live frog first thing in the morning and nothing worse will happen to you for the rest of the day."

Written, no doubt, by a true sage (and frog gourmet, apparently.)

But no sage has ever started a proverb with "Take a healthy swig from a bottle of sour chocolate milk, gag, then check the cap to find that the expiration date was July 17 first thing in the morning..."

But then again, perhaps finishing that sentence is gonna jinx things up something fierce.

Apparently the level of ibuprofen that the hospital has me taking hit critical mass yesterday or something, because it's been upsetting my stomach for the first time since I ever took ibuprofen for anything. Last night I went to bed earlier than usual because it was twisting my stomach up, and this morning... well, I woke up fine this morning, took my prescription, and spent most of the train ride in to work this morning wishing I could sit down.

Anti-inflammatory action is very good and I appreciate it greatly, but right now I just want to lie down and close my eyes. 2400 mg/daily is not my idea of fun.

I told [info]kepp0xy that so many people on my flist were suddenly reading The Time Traveller's Wife, all at once, and she was sort of surprised. But just now, there were two entries on my flist right after one another (only separated by a Jhonen Vasquez blog announcement) both mentioning the book, so even I'm starting to get pretty shocked by the amount of people.

So!

Hands up if you're reading TTW, or have read it within the past month!

Oh my god. I am in love with this book. It's not often that you can make that assertion by the end of the first page, either, but I can with this one. (I'm past the first page now, obviously, but it was still how I felt.) The Book of Lost Things was like that too. I remember texting Nat at the end of the first chapter to tell her thank you so, so much for sending it to me because I knew from the start that I was going to love it. Sure enough, I did. And it's the same thing here.

Why did I never read this before now? It's been on my list for years, and I just never got around to it until Nat started practically beating me over the head with the thing.

God. I want to just sink into Niffenegger's style of prose and never come out again. I might even do it. Maybe I'll just spend tonight doing absolutely nothing but reading it in bed.

One of the things I wanted to accomplish this week was clothes shopping. A space opened up this afternoon, so I left Kiki in charge of the other kids and took off to Savers. I spent a peaceful hour browsing through the racks and trying things on. In the end I found 4 pairs of pants, a shirt, and a sweater for about $30. I love Savers.

When I came home, I realized that what I really wanted to do was get outside and do something active. It has been far too long since I've done something enjoyable that requires muscle power. (Hauling boxes of books is exercise, but it ain't fun.) Since I'd already ditched the kids once, this time I decided to take them along. I decided on a bike ride. A couple of months ago we bough Kiki a new bike. This meant that for the first time in more than a decade, we own a bike that is the right size for me. I asked her if I could borrow it. Gleek and Patch got out their bikes and we got ready to hit the road.

Kiki followed us out saying "I've got to see this." It turns out that she thought the idea of mom on a bike was highly amusing. It was new territory for the other kids as well. They kept making encouraging statements to me about how bikes were fun and I should not worry. Amid a cloud of well intentioned advice, we set off. It was not a fast or exciting ride because I had to keep to a pace that Patch could maintain. His legs and wheels are smaller than mine. The return trip took three times as long as the trip out because we turned around when Patch started complaining of tired legs instead of anticipating tiredness and turning around sooner. We were all hot and sweaty by the time we arrived home, but a good time was had by all. I shall have to do it again, although I think I'll try to pick a time of day when it is not 90 degrees outside.

Just read "The Killing Joke" for the first time...they republished it this year (likely due to Chris Nolan citing it as one of the inspirations for TDK Joker). I wish it'd been longer. It's certainly obvious how the plot of the comic influenced the movie...just changed the character the Joker was driving mad.

I also found this interesting, from the afterward by the artist:

"I, for instance, would never have chosen to reveal a Joker origin. I think of this as just one of a number of possible origin stories manifesting itself in the Joker's fevered brain."
-Brian Bolland, 2008

Either Chris Nolan had a chat with him while he was developing TDK, or there was some mind-melding going on. Either way, I whole-heartedly agree and absolutely loved the related element of the movie.

I have been busy! Unfortunately, this means I have lots that I idly ponder writing about, which adds up to enough to ensure I'll probably never get around to doing it for all of them because I can't decide what. (As opposed to usual, when I never get around to updating because... uh. Look over there! It's a diversion!)

Anyway. This means you get a scattershot list! And if you want me to ramble further on anything in comments, odds are good that you can persuade me to do so.

Possibly there is other stuff I'm forgetting. OH WELL. I am hitting post anyway.

No foods! Bad! [

Houston is 3 inches from the sun and Dingo is unexpectedly spending the week in Austin (he was supposed to return today---long story, all to the good, except for the missing him part). Result: total lack of interest in food.

But I suppose I'll go to the stupid store tonight, just in case we have a dang hurricane.

(Chances are small that we will.)

ETA: When my sibs and I arrived at Innisfree, our heart-cousins up the hill (being Georgia belles) had brought over enough lunch for 75 people, including deviled eggs (great for brekkie! Who knew?) and ... *drumroll* homemade pimento cheese sandwiches. I about had a religious epiphany that there is a loving god smiling down on me from heaven in this glorious world that contains homemade pimento cheese sandwiches.

Today one of my coworkers sent around an email that there were sandwiches left over from a meeting and I thought, "Truly it would be a miracle if one of those sammies was pimento cheese." But alas. They were all the gross food-services grilled veg ones with no sauce and FAR too much eggplant.

Note to self: perhaps this entry gives one a clue as to what groceries to buy.
Reply to self: You think?

Just about everyone seems to have woken up in a terrible state today and then not had things improve much from there. I include myself in that list.

Now, in an attempt to turn my day around, I'm about to go have dinner and a movie with Brad ([info]burado) since he's in town for a few days. (Apparently this is The Week Of Seeing My Favourite People For Dinner, because I was out with Angus last night too. I am really, really not complaining.) At the very least, I will get lots of hugs and good company, which is really the entire point regardless of whether or not the specifics of our plans work out. I will be happy even if we wind up stranded on the Transitway for an hour because the bus broke down.

I hope everybody else manages to find their own way of doing the same, and that the universe allows them to succeed. Please let me know if there's anything I can do? You guys are wonderful, wonderful people and you deserve much better than this collective morass of frustration and pain. ♥

It's the sort of weather for staring out of the window and listening to plodding atmospheric music. Doesn't get much done, that, does it?

A snail named after Heikki Kovalainen won the world snail racing championships. Hem hem, at least someone is winning something.

The University of Turmoil (as per Danny Baker and Danny Kelly) today features Michael Vaughan. (if you wish to participate in the 1990s style fun that is the University of Turmoil, simply procure yourself a picture of Michael Vaughan from today's papers, and write the word "TURMOIL" on his forehead).

Yesterday, we took a walk by the coast, past Baycliff and Aldingham. Graved into a limestone rock on Baycliff beach there is a long message - neither of us had camera or even phone camera with us, but from memory it went a little like this, in very neat capital letters about 2 inches high:
"THE QUEEN CELEBRATED HER SILVER JUBILEE
SOCIALISM IS LIFE
IN THIS UNCHRISTIAN WORLD
SOME CANNOT AFFORD TO WORK
WHILE OTHERS ARE PAID TOO MUCH TO DO POINTLESS JOBS
THERE IS A PILL AND A CURE FOR EVERYTHING
EXCEPT HONESTY
KING OF ROCK AND ROLL ELVIS PRESLEY HAS DIED
GREAT SINGER FRANK SINATRA HAS DIED
THIS WAS HIS THEME "
and then I think it has a line from "fly me to the moon" written in elegant minuscule...
"BUT THE BIGGEST SONG OF THE YEAR
WAS FROM SWEDISH GROUP ABBA
'KNOWING ME, KNOWING YOU'
I SHALL WRITE YOU THE CHORUS
Knowing me, knowing you
There is nothing we can do
Knowing me, knowing you
We just have to face it, this time we're through
Breaking up is never easy, I know but I have to go
Knowing me, knowing you
It's the best I can do"

I'll go down there again and take a photo.

redheads

[to_fadeaway]

hello! first time poster here. just thought id introduce myself a little and throw in a few pictures as well.

im a twenty year old girl from the US, and im the oldest of four redheaded siblings. my mother is a redhead and my father had auburn hair when he was younger. so, its not hard to see where i got it from xD but i wouldnt call it red so much as it is ORANGE. gah. past history with my hair hasnt all been sunshine and flowers. i used to absolutely hate my hair color. i got teased for it, made fun of, and 'petted' by elderly women on a daily basis.

now its used for cheap pick-up lines.

"is that your natural color, baby?"

pleaseshootmenow.

buuut, i cant say that i havent grown to like it. it makes me unique, different, and it makes me stand out. and i love the fact that everyone on this community is so proud of who they are. its taken me years and years to get to where i am, and i still cant say im completely happy with anything.

for stats, i have red hair (of course) and grey/green eyes. they shift color sometimes, so its hard to tell. theyve even been known to look blue. im five foot seven, and a complete mutt. im irish, scottish, polish, native american, french, english, jewish, and more. but i like it that way.

oh, im also cursed blessed with freckles... all over the place.

So I was imagehunting for a man playing a grand piano -- as reference photo for a Lucifer drawing I want to do -- and I came across this on the first page of google's imagesearch.

It's a man!

Playing the grand piano in the middle of Oslo's main downtown pedestrian street!

I was like, "HEY, I RECOGNISE THAT, THAT'S KARL JOHAN [STREET]". :>

Now I'm looking through the rest of this flickr guy's Oslo sets (1, 2), because they are beautiful. I encourage you to check it out too, if you're at all curious about what Wegiecapital looks like.

Or if you're just a fan of really pretty city and street photography in general. That too.

Waiting... [
]

sandratayler
This morning was filled with the last-minute bustle of preparing for Comic con. At 3 pm Howard hugged us all, climbed into the van and left. I watched him drive away. Then I walked into the house and stopped. Every time Howard leaves on a trip I go into this numb state where I'm just waiting for him to get back. I spend lots of time reading or watching movies because it makes the time pass more quickly. I'm usually able to shake it off after the first 24 hours, mostly. The rhythms of the days are broken. True, I enjoy watching girlie movies without feeling like I'm using time I should be spending with Howard, but then the movies are over and the house is empty of conversation. Unless I want to spend time listening to the antics of the Sim families that my kids have created. (We're experiencing a Sims revival at our house this week.)

Tomorrow I need to get back into gear. There are things I need to get done before next week. "Waiting for Howard to get back" should not be among my top ten priorities.

An Outrageous Attempt to Undermine Women's Rights [
]

canyon_lady
[ mood | angry ]

Okay, I'm kind of speechless. I'm sure that federally labeling birth control "abortion" is an excellent idea, really. Because having access to effective birth control is a societal ill that needs to be restricted, fer sure. /sarcasm

"The Bush Administration is up to its old tricks again, quietly putting ideology before science and women's health. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is poised to put in place new barriers to accessing common forms of contraception like birth control pills, emergency contraception and IUDs by labeling them "abortion." These proposed regulations set to be released next week will allow healthcare providers to refuse to provide contraception to women who need it. We can't let them get away with this underhanded move to undermine women's health and that's why I am sounding the alarm." Source

More under the cut )

I'm pissed. Personal beliefs aside, if these regulations go forward, they are endangering the health and independence of all woman who are still of reproductive age. (And they would probably be dammed inconvenient to the men, too! *g*) If you also find this outrageous, ridiculous and believe that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services should not be putting these regulations in place, you can take action through Senator Clinton's petition here, through Planned Parenthood, and/or by writing to your Senators and Congressmen

Thanks to [info]anonymous_sibyl for the heads up; I've basically just quoted her more thoughtful and well-written post on the subject.
